Town Council Projects

Barmouth Town Council undertakes projects from time to time to the benefit of the Community in Barmouth. This is as well as supporting projects run by community groups.

CCTV

Barmouth's original CCTV system was set up and managed by a community group Gwarchod Bermo. This group of volunteers ran a system that helped in numerous incidents to support the police and act as a deterant to crime. In 2022, the Town Council, in partnership with the Police, took over responsibility for the CCTV system and carried out an upgrade to the system, replacing damaged cameras and extending the coverage. This system is now fully operational and providing an invaluable resource to the Police to address crime and reduce anti-social behaviour. This project was led by Cllr Phil Hill for the Town Council.

Bridge Monument

During the renovation work on Barmouth Bridge, councillors were in close contact with the contractors carrying out the work. This enabled them to put aside a couple of pieces of the old bridge to display in Barmouth. One of the few pieces of land in Barmouth owned by the Council is the corner between Jubilee Road, the Railway and the sub-station. The sections of the bridge were taken away, sand-blasted, painted and assembled on a new reinforced concrete base. In partnership with Network Rail, an informative plaque is being designed to add historical and local information to the monument. This project was led by Cllr Jamie Brooks.

History Project

In 2023 a project was started to document and preserve Barmouth History. The aims of the project were not only to bring the various elements of history together in one place and to make that accessible to people, but to also provide a forum for people to share their own memories and connect with other Barmouth residents past and present. The project has grown beyond all expectations and now has many parts.

  • The History Project banners and artifacts in St John's Church. Eight banners summarise the history of Barmouth covering topics from the Early Beginnings, through Agriculture, Mining, Ship Building and Tourism. They chart the growth of the town fromthe oldest houses on The Rock via Georgian homes on the High Street to the expansion of the town after the railway arrived in Victorian times.

  • There was too much information to be presented on the banners, so the full text has been published in a booklet. Available from a few shops in town in either Cymraeg or English. This full test is also available on this website.

  • A Facebook Page was created for Barmouth Residents past and present to share memories, photos and stories, documenting recent history for future generations. This has been amazingly popular and now has over 7,000 members.

  • Visits to local schools - as a result of the project, some of the artifacts have been taken into the local primary school to share the local history with the next generation as they make history for future residents of Barmouth.

This project has had the support of a large number of local people who have contributed by writing the panels, type-setting and design, translating and reviewing the content. The Council is especially grateful to Hugh Roberts for access to his Flickr archive with many thousands of historical photos. The project was led by Cllr Rob C Williams who continues to look for ways to share local history.
